Liza Strandgaard

Liza Strandgaard is head of the undergraduate section at the Centre for Health Sciences Education (CESU).

She is responsible for research, development, consulting and teaching, and has the financial and staff responsibility for the undergraduate section at CESU.

Liza Strandgaard has a broad experience at Health, Aarhus University where she previously has carried out functions within the management of the faculty budget and accounts, and as coordinator for institutional accreditation and adviser to the vice dean of education.

Prior to this, she has held positions at Aarhus County, Children and Youth and at the central administration of Viborg-Kjellerup Hospital.

Liza Strandgaard has a master’s degree in political science from Aarhus University.




Iris Maria Pedersen

Iris Maria Pedersen is MSc in Education Science and holds a Bachelor of Education (BEd). She did her master’s thesis on cross-professional knowledge sharing and knowledge creation between primary school teachers and pedagogues using an Organizational Learning perspective.

She has substantial teaching experience – both in-class and blended formats – and is primary developer of AU’s online GDPR-course for students.

As a research assistant at Centre for Health Sciences Education she does online course development, qualitative research and course development on the concept of Facilitated Multi-Source Feedback, and teaches the introductory course for student teachers on pedagogics and didactics.  

Iris’ field of expertise is within education science and higher education teaching, especially concerning higher education pedagogical competence development, facilitated multi-source feedback and Educational IT.

Janne Saltoft Hansen

Janne Saltoft Hansen is an e-learning consultant at Centre for Health Sciences Education (CESU) and as the project lead of the LMS (Blackboard) implementation project at the Faculty of Health she is responsible for both the system and the pedagogical implementation.

Janne has been working in the area of Educational IT for more than 15 years. She has a master degree in Information Studies from Aarhus University and has been dedicated to the field of pedagogical use of technology ever since.

In relation to Educational IT her primary competences are:

  • Pedagogical use and e-learning didactics
  • Project management of cross organizational and interdisciplinary projects
  • Organizational implementation and faculty development based on strategical goals
  • Establishing and running super user organizations and forums for the exchange of experience
  • Quality assurance through counselling and development of templates and guidelines

She is an experienced teacher and teaches courses in Blackboard as well as she takes part in local Blackboard implementation projects around the faculty.

Jens Kærsgaard

Jens Laurs Brøndum Kærsgaard is an educational and pedagogical consultant at Centre for Health Sciences Education at Aarhus University (CESU). His educational background is a BSc in Sport Science and a Master of Science in Public Health (cand.scient.san.publ.). His thesis concerned an investigation on how the motivation for physical activity can be impeded and facilitated among Greenlandic primary school children to prevent overweight.

He has his interest in educational development and learning design and how to incorporate educational IT and blended learning in order to enhance student-centred learning environments. One of the areas of interest is how feedback is organized and supported in teaching and education.

He is highly involved with undergraduate teaching assistants at Health and how to optimize their teaching and pedagogical skills. He has established a community where teaching assistants have the opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences in teaching and student learning.

He contributes to faculty development through counselling of educators at all levels in the development of courses and teaching at Health, and currently he runs courses in teaching and learning for PhD students and assistant professors at the teacher training programme.

Kamilla Pedersen

Kamilla Pedersen is PhD student at Center for Health Science Education, Aarhus University. She is the founder of the simulation based teaching concept, PsychSim which makes use of virtual cases, depicting clinical meetings between simulated patients and health professionals.

Her research is driven by the fascination of communication as the fundamental assessment core in psychiatry, and want to study how virtual cases in blended learning curriculums for pre- and postgraduate doctors, affects attitudes towards psychiatry and self-perceived efficacy in communication prior to clinic. Simulation-based training in psychiatry applied to virtual teaching is an area under rapid development and underexposed in research, in which Kamilla contributes.

Her educational background and clinical experience in educational anthropology, psychiatric research nurse, certified simulation instructor and teacher in clinical psychiatry on all educational levels qualifies her area of research interest and contributes to the generation of new innovative angles and multidisciplinary perspectives in her field.

Karl-Johan Schmidt Nielsen

Karl-Johan Schmidt Nielsen holds a MSc in Political Science from Aarhus University. During his education, he has worked as an assistant teacher on the Institute of Political Science, and has hereby obtained hands-on experience with classroom teaching at the university level.

He has previously worked at the Danish Institute for Sports Studies, where he among other projects helped evaluate the dual-career experiences and effect of dual-career programs on elite athletes in Danish secondary education.

In his position as research assistant at Centre for Educational Development, Karl-Johan’s focus is on evaluating and developing the didactic and pedagogical qualifications of the teaching faculty at Health.

Karl-Johan has extensive experience with both qualitative and quantitative methods, survey design and econometrical analysis. He has a strong theoretical grasp on the sociology of knowledge, and wrote his thesis on social class in the 21st century focusing on the sociology of knowledge underpinning the concept.

Liv Tholstrup

Liv Tholstrup is an Educational and Pedagogical Consultant at Centre for Health Sciences Education (CESU), Faculty of Health, Aarhus University. Her background is a Bachelor of Education (Teacher Education) and a MA in Educational Sociology. Additionally, Liv has supplemented her education with courses in process facilitation, coaching, career guidance, human resources, psychology, and communications.

Liv´s professional background is in the field of training, learning, HRD and organizational psychology and development working several years within education, management consulting, engineering, hospitals, and pharma/medical technology industries.

Liv´s teaching experience derives form secondary schools, internal academies in large knowledge firms, and from University College Copenhagen, Institute of Leadership and Administration.

Liv is not only experienced in the role as teacher and trainer, but also as training partner and development consultant with a strong interest in health sciences, medical pedagogy, and clinical education. At CESU Liv is working with competence development of trainers at Faculty of Health, developing a broad range of learning activities within clinical teaching, developing blended learning concepts, and acting as an internal consultant. 

Lone Folmer Nielsen

Lone Folmer Nielsen is member of the administrative staff at the Centre for Health Sciences Education.

Her main areas of responsibility are human resources, web, course administration, and administrative assistance to the management.

Lone Folmer Nielsen has studied Scandinavian Language and Literature and Rhetoric at Aarhus University. After her studies she worked as high school teacher and as academic assistant. 

Mads Ronald Dahl

Education: MSc biotechnology, Aarhus University, Denmark. PhD innate immunology, Leicester University, England. MI, Master in Informatics, Aalborg University, Denmark.

Research: currently my research has focus on the usage Of Technology in relation to higher education in Health sciences. Educational it will become a fully integrated part Of the University workflow. Thus we need to be able to select and qualify the solutions and choises we face. Research in learning analytics, blended learning and mobile technology can help us make better educations.

Teaching all levels of audience form public to senior professors and administration with a central role in the Assistant professor pedagogical Education, I have become a experienced teacher. This part Of my work i cherish and find both challenging and rewarding.

Innovation and development in health sciences by means Of Technology and informatics is a cultural movement. CESU EDU-it has made a effort to position itself as a central resource to the faculty and its members as well as the networks Of which we are part of. I see Technology and informatics as a central part of Education in the future.

Maria Louise Gamborg


Maria is a trained psychologist from Aarhus University, and has worked with geriatric patients in both the psychiatric hospital and in care settings, supervising nurses, physical therapists, and nursing home staff.

This experience sparked the idea for her PhD, where she is exploring how doctors make decisions about older adults in the emergency setting. She is especially interested in the development of expertise and the role of distributed cognition in teams, in training adaptive expertise. Her research is based on both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, exploring decision-making as a cognitive phenomenon through ethnographic and statistical methods. Her work seeks to understand how (1) decision-making in medicine is theoretically conceptualized, (2) similarities and discrepancies between novice and expert doctors’ clinical decision-making competencies in geriatric emergency medicine, and (3) understanding geriatric emergency medicine training needs amongst young doctors.

Mette Krogh Christensen

Mette Krogh Christensen is Associate Professor at Center for Health Sciences Education, Faculty of Health, Aarhus University. Her background is a master in human and social science of sport (1995) and a PhD in faculty development in Physical Education (2001), both at Copenhagen University, Denmark. Her research interests and expertise revolve around psychological, educational, and cultural aspects of talent development, career transitions, paradigmatic trajectories, and situated learning in the fields of health sciences education and their professions. Methodologically, her research includes qualitative research interviews, expert interviews, biographical narratives and focus group interviews in combination with questionnaires and passive participant observation. 

She has published 30 international peer-reviewed papers, supervised 8 PhD students and more than 20 master students, and participated in 5 international PhD assessment committees. She is vice-chair of the Danish Network for Educational Development in Higher Education and was board-member of the Ministry of Culture Research Council (2004-2008).

In addition to research, she is a highly experienced educator with expertise in the areas of educational theory, supervision, psychological and social aspects of talent development, and qualitative methods. Currently she runs PhD-supervisor courses and courses in teaching and learning for PhD students and assistant professors.

Pernille Andreassen

Pernille Andreassen holds a postdoc position at Center for Health Science Education, Aarhus University. Her educational background is an MA in anthropology from Aarhus University and a PhD in medical anthropology from the University of Southern Denmark.

Her research interests span from the quality and practice of medicine in modern health care systems, the impact of work-place based assessment on doctors’ education and transfer of learning in medical education to the connections between quality of life, health and disease. Methodologically, her research is based on classical anthropological fieldwork methods such as semi-structured interviews, focus group interviews and participant observation as well as having experience with different types of questionnaires and surveys. She has teaching experience within the fields of medical anthropology and qualitative research methods.

Prior to her employment at Center for Health Science Education, she has done research and published peer reviewed articles within the areas of palliative care and communication about end of life care as well as about both adult and child obesity and the experiences of parents with overweight children.

Peter Musaeus

Educational scientist and faculty developer, Peter’s passion stems from the fundamental riddle about how health professionals and students learn to model their world and hereby create health and development.

Since 2011, Peter has been tenure track associate professor in health sciences education at CESU. He has done research with physicians, engineers, and psychologists trying to bridge epistemology and empirical research methodologies. He has been visiting professor/scholar at University of Central Florida, UC-Berkeley, University of Sussex and Virginia Tech.

He has lead review committees for PhD-defenses and taught at most Danish Universities and at Bergen University College as course responsible, lecturer, guest lecturer, seminar teacher, or evaluator at all levels of the academic ladder. His background as clinician and licensed psychologist helps him relate to the educational needs of clinical teachers.

He researches how (1) educational technologies mediate students’ conceptual understanding; (2) patterns of physician-patient communication produce patient understanding of conditional risks (3) medical simulation produces team learning?

Sigurd Beier Sloth

Sigurd Beier Sloth, MD, PhD student at the Center for Health Sciences Education (CESU), Faculty of Health, Aarhus University. Sigurd graduated from medical school at Aarhus University in 2014 and after his residency, he began his currently ongoing specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

From 2014-2015 he worked as a consultant for the Danish Health Authority in the development of the national clinical guideline on hysterectomy for benign gynecological conditions. He is a member of the steering committee for the development of national gynecological guidelines under the Danish Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology (DSOG).

Sigurd's field of interest and research at CESU is the postgraduate medical education continuum where he is particularly interested in the use of simulation and skills training. Experiences in his own specialist training, and his work as a teacher and facilitator in simulation and skills training is driving this interest. Sigurd is currently doing a study aiming to generate new knowledge about the effect of surgical simulation and skills training courses. In this context, he wants to investigate factors involved in the transfer of training, the retention and development of acquired skills and the effect of new simulation and skills training programs.

Rikke Amalie Agergaard Jensen

Rikke Amalie Agergaard Jensen is a postdoctoral fellow at Centre for Health Sciences Education (CESU). Her background is a master in psychology (2014) and a PhD in psychology (2020), both at Aarhus University, Denmark. Her research interest and expertise revolve around autobiographical memory and psychopathology, narrative identity in psychopathology, and stigmatization and self-stigmatization of individuals suffering from psychopathology. Building on her research interests and expertise, Rikke’s current research aims at exploring relations between the use of virtual patients and patient-centered learning in educational psychiatry.
